Don’t Blow Up What You Have, To Get What You Want
You spend your 20’s and 30’s building a life: finding work, forming relationships, creating routines, taking on responsibilities, and trying to establish some degree of stability and success. Some of those decisions are made deliberately, while others happen because an opportunity appears, somebody needs an answer, or it simply seems like the “right” next thing you’re supposed to do.
And then, by the time you reach your 40s or 50s, all those choices have accumulated into a life that’s chock full of history, obligations, relationships, and consequences. You may know yourself better now than you did 20 or 30 years ago, but changing direction after doing all that building can feel wildly complicated and risky.
So, how do you move forward without treating everything you’ve built as disposable? You start by taking an honest look at what no longer fits or isn’t working, alongside what you still value. That’s the kind of work NHM Coaching is here to help you with: examining all your options, weighing what each one means, deciding what makes sense for you now, and then creating the plan to get you there.
When What Worked Before Doesn’t Work The Same Way Now
You can be grateful for the life you’ve built and still want part of it to be different.
The difficult part is figuring out what, exactly, needs your attention. A new direction can directly affect your responsibilities, relationships, routines, finances, and the people who rely on you. Advice like “follow your passion” or “just take the leap” doesn’t do fuck all for you when those things are a core part of the equation.
Sometimes the answer is a significant decision. Other times, it’s a smaller adjustment, a conversation you’ve been putting off, or a choice to leave something alone for now. The point isn’t to manufacture a dramatic reinvention, it’s to understand what you’re dealing with well enough to make a considered choice about what comes next.
Practical Decision Systems and Strategies For Midlifers
NHM Coaching is built around a straightforward idea: even when your circumstances limit what is realistically possible, you usually still have choices worth considering.
That means looking honestly at:
- What is and isn’t working for you
- What you want to protect, keep, or let go of
- The obligations and relationships affected by your decision
- The options available within your actual circumstances, and
- The trade-offs and consequences attached to each one
This isn’t about pretending you can control every outcome or blaming you for circumstances you didn’t choose, it’s about helping you see where you do have some room to decide, then use it deliberately.
Midlife Considered (The Newsletter)
Each Tuesday, I send a note about one part of navigating midlife, along with a link to the full companion blog post (in case you want to explore that week’s idea more deeply).
It’s for people who want or need to make sense of what comes next, then figure out how to get there without blowing everything else up in the process.
About John
I’m John Vermaes, a Midlife Transition Coach, and the person behind NHM Coaching.
I don’t believe every difficult situation has a simple answer, and I don’t have much use for advice that ignores money, responsibilities, relationships, or the fact that you might not know what you want yet.
My work is about helping people examine their options, think through the consequences, and make practical decisions without pretending the risks or constraints don’t exist.
